Companions to Isolated Elliptical Galaxies : Revisiting the Bothun - Sullivan ( 1977 ) Sample
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate the number of physical companion galaxies for a sample of relatively isolated elliptical galaxies. The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) has been used to reinvestigate the incidence of satellite galaxies for a sample of 34 elliptical galaxies, first investigated by Bothun & Sullivan (1977) using a visual inspection of Palomar Sky Survey prints out to a projected search radius of 75 kpc. We have repeated their original investigation using data cataloged data in NED. Nine of these ellipticals appear to be members of galaxy clusters: the remaining sample of 25 galaxies reveals an average of +1.0 ± 0.5 apparent companions per galaxy within a projected search radius of 75 kpc, in excess of two equal-area comparison regions displaced by 150-300 kpc. This is significantly larger than the +0.12 ± 0.42 companions/galaxy found by Bothun & Sullivan for the identical sample. Making use of published radial velocities, mostly available since the completion of the Bothun-Sullivan study, identifies the Co-Director, NASA/IPAC Extraglactic Database (NED), California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA 92215

The Ages of Disturbed Field Elliptical Galaxies. Ii. Central Properties
The formation of elliptical galaxies via the merger of gas-rich disks has received considerable attention in recent years, with many studies strongly supporting the merger hypothesis. When investigated in detail, the dynamics of a major merger that produces a high phase-space density of material (e.g., the center of an elliptical galaxy) invariably produces the ubiquitous signature of a central...

We use the Karachentseva (1973) “Catalogue of Very Isolated Galaxies” to investigate a candidate list of > 100 very isolated early-type galaxies. Broad-band imaging and low resolution spectroscopy are available for a large fraction of these candidates and result in a sample of 102 very isolated early-type galaxies, including 65 ellipticals and 37 S0 galaxies. Many of these systems are quite lum...
متن کاملThe Ages of Disturbed Field Elliptical Galaxies. I. Global Properties
Near-infrared images of elliptical galaxies with morphological signatures of recent merger activity have been obtained. If this merger activity stimulated signiÐcant and distributed star formation within the region deÐned by then JHK photometry in this region should detect the presence of an R\ 1.5R e , intermediate-age stellar population associated with this event. Our observations, however, s...
متن کاملOutliers from the Mass–Metallicity Relation I: A Sample of Metal-Rich Dwarf Galaxies from SDSS
We have identified a sample of 41 low-mass high–oxygen abundance outliers from the mass–metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies measured by Tremonti et al. (2004). These galaxies, which have 8.6 < 12 + log(O/H) < 9.3 over a range of −14.4 > MB > −19.1 and 7.4 < log(M⋆/M⊙) < 10, are surprisingly non-pathological. They have typical specific star formation rates, they are fairly isolated and...
متن کاملSatellites of Isolated Elliptical Galaxies
Using well-defined selection criteria applied to the LEDA galaxy catalogue we have derived a sample of elliptical galaxies that can be classified as isolated. From this we have investigated the neighbourhood of these galaxies to determine the frequency and radial distribution of faint galaxies around them and hence derive an estimate of their surrounding satellite population. The results are co...
